The 519, formerly known as 'The 519 Church Street Community Centre', and featured in this design, is the hub of community life in Toronto's diverse Church and Wellesley Village. Since its opening in 1975, The 519 has been working with both neighbours and the LGBTQ community to create welcoming, healthy spaces to meet, participate and celebrate together.
In the early 1800's a portion of the neighbourhood was the estate of Alexander Wood, a merchant and magistrate in Upper Canada, and a forefather of Toronto's modern gay community. In 2005, a statue of Wood was erected to honour him.
The Village hosts the annual Pride Toronto celebrations, the largest event of its kind in Canada.
